Not worth the money, time or effort
Revisado: 08-31-24
I have read a number of Steinbeck’s novels over the years. This one seems overrated as well as overwrought. It feels dated overall. I also find Steinbeck way too preachy here, and the plot sometimes seems quite implausible. I stayed with it till the end because I always try hard to finish the books that I select, but I don’t really consider it to have been a good use of my time.

Arguably the greatest science fiction writer who ever lived, Isaac Asimov also possessed one of the most brilliant and original minds of our time. His accessible style and far-reaching interests in subjects ranging from science to humor to history earned him the nickname "the Great Explainer". I. Asimov is his personal story - vivid, open, and honest - as only Asimov himself could tell it.

Asimov as a dynamic personality was beyond impressive and the book was well worth listening to.
Revisado: 06-20-24
I liked hearing about Asimov’s childhood and formative years; very interesting how he learned to recognize his faults, as well as his own brilliance, and how to navigate in the world and get along with people. I admired him overall, but I was extremely put off by his vitriolic, shallow, small-minded comments about so-called conservatives whom he loved to hate with an irrational passion. The chapter on Al Capp was especially revealing as to how even a brilliant man can form opinions early in life that are allowed to remain unexamined for years until they become sheer prejudice with little basis in actual fact. It was offensive to hear him rant about non-progressives while offering little if any concrete evidence to support his assertions. That said, his work ethic was truly amazing. Odd, that I listened to this whole thing and I’ve never read any of his other works and have no plans to do so.

Historia
In We Don't Know Ourselves, Fintan O'Toole weaves his own experiences into Irish social, cultural, and economic change, showing how Ireland, in just one lifetime, has gone from a reactionary "backwater" to an almost totally open society - perhaps the most astonishing national transformation in modern history. O'Toole narrates the once unthinkable collapse of the all-powerful Catholic Church, brought down by scandal and by the activism of ordinary Irish. He relates the horrific violence of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which led most Irish to reject violent nationalism.

A brilliant book
Revisado: 05-23-24
Rich in detail and and insightful throughout. I learned so much about Ireland, so much in fact that I realized over and over again how very little I had actually known before listening to this book. Well-written and full of astute analysis. I thought sometimes the author went on a little too long on some points, showing a somewhat professorial, pedantic tendency, but overall it was quite engaging, and I would highly recommend it.

Historia
As It Turns Out is a family story. Alice Sedgwick Wohl is writing to her brother Bobby, who died in a motorcycle accident in 1965, just before their sister Edie Sedgwick met Andy Warhol. After unexpectedly coming across Edie's image in a clip from Warhol's film Outer and Inner Space, Wohl was moved to put her inner dialogue with Bobby on the page in an attempt to reconstruct Edie's life and figure out what made Edie and Andy such iconic figures in American culture.

Revisado: 02-10-24
I loved the author’s voice, her manner of reading as well as her mature point of view and her writing style. Classy to say the least. Her insights into how and why her sister’s life turned out as it did were only part of the story. But it was all interesting.

Historia
The Kennedy wives saw history up close - and made history in some cases. They knew wealth and privilege, but we are bonded to them by losses that are our losses, too. The Kennedy women - fierce, intelligent, and very private - belong to us. Not because of their glamour but because of their grief and misfortunes. The Kennedy Wives takes an unflinching look at the women who married into the Kennedy family and their distinct roles.

Found this book engaging and not too overly partial to the Kennedy clan to strain credibility. I already knew most of this stuff so I was glad it didn’t get bogged down in trivial details, but moved right along and kept my interest. I would recommend it.

Historia
Joy Davidman is known, if she is known at all, as the wife of C. S. Lewis. Their marriage was immortalized in the film Shadowlands and Lewis' memoir, A Grief Observed. Now, through extraordinary new documents as well as years of research and interviews, Abigail Santamaria brings Joy Davidman Gresham Lewis to your ears in the fullness and depth she deserves. A poet and radical, Davidman was a frequent contributor to the communist vehicle New Masses and an active member of New York literary circles in the 1930s and '40s.

A very interesting biography
Revisado: 10-22-23
This book was very well written and the reader did an excellent job narrating it. Much of the time I realized I did not care for the character of Joy for obvious reasons. I appreciated the author’s willingness to show the negative aspects of her subject as well as the positive. I felt very sorry for her long suffering first husband Bill because of the cruel treatment he received from Joy. Overall, the book gave me an interesting perspective on the historical forces at play during these times. It was engaging and educational, and has inspired me to read some of C.S. Lewis’ works
straight away.

The art world is a much dirtier, nastier business than you might expect. Tony Tetro, one of the most renowned art forgers in history, will make you question every masterpiece you’ve ever seen in a museum, gallery, or private collection. Tetro’s “Rembrandts,” “Caravaggios,” “Miros,” and hundreds of other works now hang on walls around the globe.

The Reading was First Rate
Revisado: 10-04-23
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this account of the subject’s
amazing life. At times I felt quite judgmental at his basic dishonesty, but at least a “sort of” justice prevailed in the end, and I was content to see that happen. The voice quality and overall skill of the reader helped carry this production forward so that it was entertaining, educational, and quite worthwhile. Recommended!

To this day, mention the name “Andy Warhol” to almost anyone and you’ll hear about his famous images of soup cans and Marilyn Monroe. But though Pop Art became synonymous with Warhol’s name and dominated the public’s image of him, his life and work are infinitely more complex and multifaceted than that. In Warhol, esteemed art critic Blake Gopnik takes on Andy Warhol in all his depth and dimensions.

It was worth the time it took.
Revisado: 08-05-23
Yes it was worth it , but in the end my overall opinion of Warhol was diminished considerably having listened to the entire thing. In this day and age, we are repeatedly told “not to judge,” but I believe that’s false advice, I have standards for right behavior which I use to I judge my own actions I expect others to do the same. There ere numerous places in this account where I found Warhol’s behavior appalling to say the least. even when I was trying to be generous and tolerant. I also think much of his work is seriously overrated.
Still, this was well written and fairly objective overall. The narration was first rate.

No running water, no car, no electricity or any of the things it powers: the internet, phone, washing machine, radio, or light bulb. Just a wooden cabin, on a smallholding, by the edge of a stand of spruce. The Way Home is a modern-day Walden - an honest and lyrical account of a remarkable life lived in nature without modern technology. Mark Boyle, author of The Moneyless Man, explores the hard-won joys of building a home with his bare hands, learning to make fire, collecting water from the stream, foraging, and fishing.

Quite thought provoking and totally worthwhile
Revisado: 06-02-23
This was a super engaging listen for me. It took me into to another world and way of living which I needed to see and to visit. I loved being invited into Boyle’s extremely analytical mind. While many of his insights about modern culture and the “right” way to live were not exactly new to me, the way they were presented was entirely sincere and fresh and had an impact on me which will last, I hope, for quite a long time. I’m eighty years old and, like Boyle, I want to live every day I have left to the fullest.

In March 1999, a Palm Beach matron and her socially ambitious husband invited the elite of the island for a dinner dance honoring Prince Edward. Among those dancing to the string orchestra that evening would be those accused of murder and spousal abuse, and others who would suffer fates both unseemly and unspeakable. Among the outer circle there would be murders, suicides, and fatal fires.

A somewhat jaundiced view but still worthwhile
Revisado: 05-23-23
At times I grew pretty weary of the author’s rants on the bias against Jews in Palm Beach, as though it were still going on as it had been in much earlier days. This became tiresome, as at times he seemed to disapprove of just about everything and everyone in the town. But overall, I found this book engaging and well-written, so much so that I have even begun to think of visiting there some time soon. Recommended.
