The story was okay, but the narrator should know how to pronounce words like Connecticut (referenced throughout) and Patron (tequila) prior to recording. Also, this series is based in the U.S., primarily Connecticut, where we don't refer to every female as Mum.

It took too long to get into it. Replayed much of the beginning because the story didn't grab me so I was easily distracted. It was okay. I'm glad I didn't pay for it!

I really tried to get into it, but finally gave up. So much for being a "gripping psychological thriller"!
The narration was flat and the story was too laden with the intricacies of the main character's role.

Annoying Narration

If you are going to tell a story about an actual place, you should use the correct pronunciations. It's EdIna, not EdEEna. Also, why make the children sound so sassy when they talk to their mom? Not all children behave badly.

The story kept me engaged to see where it would go, but I was underwhelmed. It was hyped as being filled with twists and turns, but I felt like I saw each one coming from a mile away. I’ve listened to other mystery novels that actually elicit a gasp at surprise ending. If that’s what you’re looking for, this isn’t it.

Story
Katie Kuhlmann’s marriage is falling apart. But she has a secure job, her children are healthy, and her house, a new construction in the prestigious Country Club neighborhood of Edina, Minnesota, is beautiful. She can almost ignore the way her husband, Jack, has been acting—constantly checking his phone, not going to work, disappearing from the house only to show up again without explanation. Tension in the Kuhlmann house only gets worse when Adam “Bagman” Ross, a mutual friend from college, happens to be in the neighborhood and in need of a place to stay.

I have enjoyed all of the books by this author so far. I have lived in Edina for decades so it’s fun to hear so many of the places I know quite well included! There are some twists and turns in this story, but the ending shouldn’t surprise you.
Matt Goldman is a wonderful storyteller although I don’t always like the narration. Looking forward to the next one already!

Somewhat Biased Review
Reviewed: 07-27-23
I chose this book because it sounded like an interesting story, but I was also intrigued because I live in the bubble (Edina). The author clearly knows his way around my town and the surrounding ‘burbs! I have been everywhere mentioned in this book other than the Edina jail. I drive past it all the time, though, so I know he described it perfectly. I really enjoyed the story and the narrator kept me engaged, but every reference to places I know so well, brought a big smile to my face! It was the perfect introduction to this author and I’m already looking forward to listening to his next book!

I’m glad Annie ultimately made the decisions she did. And I’m glad I was wrong about how this would end. Griffin watching Roman Holiday made me think I’d be crying at the end! The narration was a little annoying, but I liked the story!
