Interesting history!
Revisado: 06-14-24
Enjoyed seeing the portrayal and information about how different presidents reacted to news and crises. I may listen again (I never do this!) just to understand better and in case there were parts I missed. Recommend!

Depressing and sad but important
Revisado: 02-24-23
This was not a story I knew about before listening to this, but I’m glad I know about it now, though it makes me sad to hear of more terrible deeds done to Native Americans by white people.

Historia
Twenty-four-year-old British painter Cleo has escaped from England to New York and is still finding her place in the sleepless city when, a few months before her student visa ends, she meets Frank. Twenty years older and a self-made success, Frank’s life is full of all the excesses Cleo’s lacks. He offers her the chance to be happy, the freedom to paint and the opportunity to apply for a green card. But their impulsive marriage irreversibly changes both their lives and the lives of those close to them, in ways they never could’ve predicted.

Good not great
Revisado: 01-26-23
I enjoyed the narration very much. The story did loop me in after a while but I thought there was a bit too many sensational bits. I don’t consider my self prudish around descriptions of sex and drugs but there were times here where I thought “enough already.” But, when it ended I wished I could know more about how the characters’ lives went from there. To me, that is an important mark of a good story.

Made me laugh out loud
Revisado: 03-13-21
If you enjoy “slice of life” stories, and the inanities and small joys of everyday life, I think you will enjoy this book. It made me laugh out loud, literally, on many occasions.

Historia
1941. Audrey Coltrane has always wanted to fly. It's why she implored her father to teach her at the little airfield back home in Texas. It’s why she signed up to train military pilots in Hawaii when the war in Europe began. And it’s why she insists she is not interested in any dream-derailing romantic involvements, even with the disarming Lieutenant James Hart, who fast becomes a friend as treasured as the women with whom she flies. Then one fateful day, she gets caught in the air over Pearl Harbor just as the bombs begin to fall, and suddenly, nowhere feels safe.

Loved it!
Revisado: 09-11-20
Books like this always make me wish I were one of those exceptional people who forge forward with their dream even when it goes against the grain. Great story—especially if you are a woman who cherishes your female friendships. That bond is truly like no other. I unabashedly laughed and cried out loud while I listened, even when walking, biking and working in the yard. Xe Sands is a wonderful reader.

Historia
Josie and her children's father have split up, she's been sued by a former patient and lost her dental practice, and she's grieving the death of a young man senselessly killed. When her ex asks to take the children to meet his new fiancée's family, Josie makes a run for it, figuring Alaska is about as far as she can get without a passport. Josie and her kids, Paul and Ana, rent a rattling old RV named the Chateau, and at first their trip feels like a vacation.

I'm left kind of empty by this book
Revisado: 08-16-16
A good friend of mine recommended this book to me so I wanted to like it. She thought the writing was great. I thought it seemed contrived at times, like it was trying too hard to be clever. I was frustrated by Josie, the protagonist...I wanted her to get a grip, to be a parent, to make some rational decisions. And I felt the story just stopped at the end--I wanted more closure, to know that all the ramblings had been worth it for Josie and her kids, that they could fit into some niche in society again. But I was just left with questions and emptiness for them. I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this book.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Revisado: 03-30-16
This is a great story, but the reading done made it even better. The accent, inflections, etc performed by Jeff Woodman made me laugh out loud at times. I tried to read this book once before and couldn't get hooked but the narrator really brought it to life.
