Publisher's summary

Blackstone Publishing presents a new recording of this immensely popular book.

One of the most celebrated classics of the twentieth century, Orwell’s cautionary tale of a man trapped under the gaze of an authoritarian state feels more relevant now than ever before.

George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police, a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities’ will and people live tepid lives by rote.

Winston Smith, the hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him. He knows even as he continues to pursue his forbidden love affair that eventually he will come to destruction.

The year 1984 has come and gone, yet George Orwell’s nightmare vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is still the great modern classic of negative Utopia. It is a prophetic and haunting tale that exposes the worst crimes imaginable: the destruction of freedom and truth.

"It is probable that no other work of this generation has made us desire freedom more earnestly or loathe tyranny with such fullness." (New York Times, 1949)

Featured Article: The top 100 classics of all time

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

Well narrated classic about torture

Well narrated classic that did a fair job of predicting what 1984 would be like while adding the twist of the technology in the hands of a group with a clear goal of simply maintaining power and increasing it. Surprising part of the book (for someone who didn't read reviews) is the amount of time spent on detailed description of torture and the impact on the human body and mind. Very depressing.

The Future is Today

I've avoided this book in the past because I watched the movie years ago and thought it was too dark and silly. The book is not the movie, it was so much better. This is a world that would exist if the radical left were to have their way. It's very possible and quite scary.

Simon Prebble did a masterful job !

Excellent read. The plot pulls you in and doesn't let go and what happens in room 101 is disturbing.

1984 is 2020 in Power Grab of America NOW!

I read 1984 in High School (1964)when this was a futuristic glance of what I thought then was an over gloomy prediction of the future Society! Shockingly, upon listening to it now, American is in deep trouble! With suppression of information, unconstitutional & illegal power grabs, the balance of equal representation of ideas and constitutional underpinnings are under threat!

Not Fiction - A vision of the future we live in

If you could sum up 1984 in three words, what would they be?

Enslaved Humanity Fails

What other book might you compare 1984 to and why?

Ayn Rand's short book "Anthem" - the stories are quite similar and would prove a nice companion to this book as they divert at key points giving us a complete view we can draw certain interesting conclusions from.

What does Simon Prebble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Simon's reading is lovely, I felt like I honestly comprehended and absorbed more of the book by hearing him read it than when I would have read the book. I am by no means a bad reader; however Simon's rythmn, enunciation, and dynamic is much better than my own.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

This book will move anyone who feels oppressed in the current scheme of political agendas, it is chilling how accurately Orwell describes our world.

Any additional comments?

Read this book for the good of our country; for the good of humanity!!

A great narrator reading one of the best novels.

This is truly one of the best novels ever written. The pacing is perfect, the characters are timeless, and it is one of the most quotable books I've ever read. The narrator was perfect for the text and did a great job bringing the characters to life.
