Publisher's summary

A love letter to mothers everywhere, About My Mother will make you laugh and cry—and see yourself in its reflection. Peggy Rowe’s story of growing up as the daughter of Thelma Knobel is filled with warmth and humor. But Thelma could be your mother—there’s a Thelma in everyone’s life. She’s the person taking charge—the one who knows instinctively how things should be.

Today, Thelma would be described as an alpha personality, but while growing up, her daughter Peggy saw her as a dictator—albeit a benevolent, loving one. They clashed from the beginning—Peggy, the horse-crazy tomboy, and Thelma, the genteel-yet-still-controlling mother, committed to raising two refined, ladylike daughters. Good luck.

When major league baseball came to town in the early 1950s and turned sophisticated Thelma into a crazed Baltimore Orioles groupie, nobody was more surprised and embarrassed than Peggy. Life became a series of compromises—Thelma tolerating a daughter who pitched manure and galloped the countryside, while Peggy learned to tolerate the whacky Orioles fan who threw her underwear at the television, shouted insults at umpires, and lived by the orange-and-black schedule taped to the refrigerator door.

Sometimes it takes a little distance to appreciate the people we love.

A most enjoyable listen

Peggy Rowe’s narration of these charming stories was absolutely perfect. I found myself wanting to listen when I was feeling a little bit down and sure enough a few stories in I could feel a big smile on my face. I’m sure you will want to listen more than once, I know I do.

I was laughing at one chapter and sobbing at the next. Beautifully written and even more beautifully read by the author.

Wiping away tears after just finishing this book. Buy it. Now. You can thank me later. It immediately went in my favorites file to listen to over & over again.

absolutely wonderful in every way

I came upon Peggy's books as the best bonus of listening to her son Mike's podcast. shame on big publishers not thinking people would be interested in Peggy's works and good on ya Mike for taking the reins. (nice horse reference there)
Peggy narrating is perfection. the world needs more story telling like this , as guiding examples and mentoring for today's families.
As a nurse, and daughter and granddaughter in charge of care of, and decision making for aging family members and patients, ( while also being a wife, and mother), listening to your books is therapy and a triggers wonderful memories. I smile, laugh. rewind, and even cry while I listen to you read your wonderful books to me. thank you so much.
