Publisher's summary

The best-selling author of Enigma and Fatherland turns to today's Vatican in a ripped-from-the-headlines novel and gives us his most ambitious, pause-resisting thriller yet - where the power of God is nearly equaled by the ambition of men.

The pope is dead. Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, 118 cardinals from all over the globe will cast their votes in the world's most secretive election. They are holy men. But they have ambition. And they have rivals. Over the next 72 hours, one of them will become the most powerful spiritual figure on earth.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Roy McMillan takes full advantage of the opportunity to display his range. While not strictly miraculous, his transformation of Cardinal Lomeli, the protagonist, from dispirited to Spirit-filled is most certainly charismatic.... McMillan's performance is a triumph, as is the book itself." (AudioFile)

Dramatic twist at end ruins the whole book

Would you try another book from Robert Harris and/or Roy McMillan?

Robert Harris probably not. The book is a great intrigue story about the election of a pope. Good plot lines. Interesting and tintillating without being disrespectful. Then in the last few moments, the story takes a 900 degree twist into an LGBT agenda. Why ruin a great story in the last few minutes to take a gab at the church on that issue. Doesn't support the story and is so inconsistent with the rest of the story. LGBT stuff doesn't really phase me, it was just the abrupt shift for an agenda.

Entertaining

Great story, it was hard to follow initially with the Italian names, but maybe I should pay more attention. I enjoy Harris' books. The narration was excellent.

I have listened to almost all of Robert Harris's books and have enjoyed them all. I like the protagonist in the story and the reader was excellent.

Odd

An odd plot for Robert Harris but as usual he carry’s reader along steadily. The descriptions of the election conclave process are prob the most interesting aspect of the book.

A great book and a very good narrator

A Well -written story. Aside from a little bit of mouth spit, the narrator is brilliant. I love the book and story! Just get it!

Cannot put it down or turn it off.

This book is Robert Harris at his absolute best. It offers a rare visit to the inner sanctums of the Vatican and has more suspense than most mystery books! Bravo! Run run run and download it!

Strong ending

Harris again proves himself a master storyteller. Well researched and with a conclusion that elevates the rest of the work.

Awesome Narration

Surprisingly good story that takes place around the process of choosing a new pope. Worth it. Not overly religious or ideological, which I have zero patience for. The narrator is amazing!

IT ENDS TOO SOON

This is the first book that i listened and finished for less than a day.... once i started playing it, its hard to stop...good reading, the story is another tour at the Vatican with the conclave and all its politics going on.... its just that it ends too soon.. i was expecting for more chapter until there is none... a good read.
