Publisher's summary

By the award-winning, New York Times best-selling author of Writers & Lovers, Lily King’s first-ever collection of exceptional and innovative short stories.

With Writers & Lovers and Euphoria, Lily King’s books catapulted onto best seller and best-of-the-year lists across the country and established her as one of our most “brilliant” (New York Times), “wildly talented” (Chicago Tribune), and beloved authors in contemporary fiction. Now, for the first time ever, King collects 10 of her finest short stories — half published in leading literary magazines and half brand new — opening fresh realms of discovery for avid and new listeners alike.

Told in the intimate voices of unique and endearing characters of all ages, these tales explore desire and heartache, loss and discovery, moments of jolting violence, and the inexorable tug toward love at all costs. A bookseller’s unspoken love for his employee rises to the surface, a neglected teenage boy finds much-needed nurturing from an unlikely pair of college students hired to housesit, a girl’s loss of innocence at the hands of her employer’s son becomes a catalyst for strength and confidence, and a proud nonagenarian rages helplessly in his granddaughter’s hospital room. Romantic, hopeful, brutally raw, and unsparingly honest, some even slipping into the surreal, these stories are, above all, about King’s enduring subject of love.

Lily King’s literary mastery, her spare and stunning prose, and her gift for creating lasting and treasured characters is on full display in this curated selection of short fiction. Five Tuesdays in Winter showcases an exhilarating new form for this extraordinarily gifted author writing at the height of her career.

This is a Do Not Miss if you like short stories.

These short stories spoke to me in so many ways. Of course, I am 65 years old and have experienced a range of emotional crises, but I think these are super relatable to anyone.

Brilliant Short Stories

This is proof once again that Lily King is a genius of a writer! I preferred each offering as a stand alone work. That allows you to absorb the intricacy of the characters King draws. The readers on Audible are fantastic. Thoroughly engrossing and enjoyable.

Outstanding

I was amazed by the diversity of characters and stories in this collection. Each story is complex and complete, yet sparks the imagination to imagine future events likely to occur as a result of the events described. I look forward to the pleasure of rereading and savoring these portraits of characters experiencing the challenges of being vulnerable humans.

My first listen to a book of short stories, and I was more than pleasantly surprised!

The stories were thought provoking and realistic. The voices for the characters fit perfectly! I debated on listening to a book of short stories, but I’m so glad I did!

Mostly enjoyed this varies selection of stories. As with most collections, there were a few that just didn’t appeal, but overall this is an interesting collection, and the narrators were all good.

Fabulous montage of stories that leave me wanting more!

Lily King’s collection of short stories illustrates the broad creative range of this fine author. Each vignette pulls me into the world Ms. King has imagined. I find myself wanting more, a full novel from each. I so admire her writing that I just ordered the hardback copy of Five Tuesdays in Winter. What amazed me most was the ease with which Ms. King can craft a story from a male point of view and then in the next, create a female who is from a different continent! Black stone Publishing has done the series the service it deserves, with both male and female voices with varying, believable accents for each short story within this volume.
The ages of her characters in each varies as well. Ms. King does not shy away from tough topics, such as alcoholism, child abuse, divorce and devastating losses, just to name a few.
Bravo Ms. King! Please give me more.

Read if you want to think

Some of these stories will remain in your mind — like a seed they will grow as you think about them later. For me they were “North Sea,” “When in the Dordogne,” and “The man at the door.” Which stories will form seeds in your mind?
