Publisher's summary

In the still shadows of the confessional, a madman tauntingly reveals his plan for a murder he is going to commit, pulling Father Thomas Madden into a twisted game by disclosing his next intended victim: Tom's sister, Laurant. In a frantic race to protect her, Tom calls upon his best friend, elite FBI agent Nick Buchanan, to track the predator who is closing in on Laurant. Now, as an electrifying attraction grows between Laurant and Nick, so does the danger - and one false move will cost both of them everything that matters.

Critic reviews

"Heartbreaker moves along at a racehorse pace, its plot swerving and darting with sudden turns and jolts.... Garwood's characters are well drawn." ( New York Post)

Decent plot, but a lot of Julie Garwood cliches

The plot was fairly interesting and I enjoyed the main characters except it was a bit heavy on the standard Julie Garwood tropes (or maybe I am just tired of them). The first big trope is a heroine who is so beautiful and wonderful everyone, male or female, is in love with them. In this case, the heroine is so beautiful she actually was a fashion model who was forced to quit, she's super smart, multilingual and also a ridiculously talented painter. She is just too perfect, and therefore does not seem at all human. The other standard trope is that the hero falls in love with the heroine almost instantly and primarily for her looks. I think personality should count a bit more. A relationship based on lust alone seems doomed since looks fade and pretty people can be horrible underneath their skin.

But otherwise the mystery was pretty good and the story moved a long at a good clip. If you like Julie Garwood and don't mind her cliches you will probably like this too.

Heartbreaker

Liked the story line. Didn’t like the reader she couldn’t keep voice for female character right first she had a French accent then she sounded American.... Would recommend for you read the book not listen to the audiobook...

A good first read of Julie Garwood

Any additional comments?

This was my first time reading her work and it was a great read! The story line was amazing and kept you curious through out the chapters on who the bad guy was. The romance was just the right touch, not overly done or overly explicit. The narrating was really good, it went with the pictures in your head and brought out the personalities.

Didn't want it to end...

Where does Heartbreaker rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I really think this was the best one (for me) in the criminal mystery category. I almost always guess the culprit, and am waiting for the author to catch up with me. That did Not happen with this one. It started off a little slow & I thought it might be too cliché', but I quickly changed my mind as I was drawn into the storyline.

What does Tanya Eby bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I loved her voice & reading style. She really pegged each character and really brought them to life.

Any additional comments?

I can't wait to start on the 2nd book in the series, and sure hope it continues with at least 2 of these characters, if not more, because I just loved them all :-)

Easy nice read

I love Julie Garwood. I read her Scottish books for the take charge take care men and the sweet love stories. I read her modern books for a light easy read. Both make me smile and sigh. Garwood will always be a favorite.
Tanya Eby did wonderful! I hope to hear more from her in the future with different authors as well!

Really good book

I love Julie Garwood and this series is beyond great. Great writing and good character development. She has kept her humor in her new series of modern mysteries.
