Publisher's summary

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials - engineered organic beings identical to humans - has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.

Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic-in-training, is on the front lines of this battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws have pushed what's left of humanity to the brink of civil war, and she's not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will find that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them - connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.

Dan Wells, acclaimed author of I Am Not a Serial Killer, takes readers on a pulsepounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question - one where our humanity is both our greatest liability and our only hope for survival.

A Good Listen

I'm a Dan Wells fan, and this book did not disappoint. The main reason I'm writing this review is so that I can encourage Audible to get Dan's 'Serial Killer' series online. I loved reading them, and I think they'd be wonderful to listen to.

Interesting

I really enjoyed the book. It was completely different from other books that I have listen to. Neat concept. I am looking forward to book 2, as book 1 of course left a huge cliff hanger!!

Great Series

I loved the entire series. It was fun, exciting, and it brought me effectively out of my own life. I was lost in this book, and so happy there were three books to keep me engaged for so long!

Great start to this YA sci-fi series

There were some slow sections, but they were necessary in some respects as Dan Wells had to build his world (which he did a great job with) and I'm really excited for what else he has to offer. The Young Adult Post-Apocalyptic genre is growing, and it is harder and harder to pick out the really good, unique books from the standard fare. I think this one isn't just more of the same. If you like that genre, this is worth listening to.

An other study of our world from an other angle.
Loved it.
Leaving you here to start with the number 2 in the series :-)

I heart Julia Whelan

Man this was a good one. It's one that completely absorbed me, and the performance is awesome. The story is well told, I was invested in the characters and I want to hear more! Good job, Mr Wells, and good job, all who worked on this!

It was okay

Story was okay but not that well written and seems to be written by a teen rather than for YA. Apparently there are no other plants than kudzu and lots of plot holes. The major one to me was that in ten years not even the learned scientists came up with the basic theories on research to discover the cure. A 16 year old did what they could not and that was hard to swallow.

People in this universe are woefully inept.

The story feels shallow. The logic is sloppy and feels middle school level. It just doesn't make sense that an Intern/novice is the only person smart enough to actually think about a few basic strategies for finding a cure to a virus. The ideas are so painfully obvious it wouldn't have taken over a decade for someone to try.

Really good!

As I’ve gotten older I have more trouble listening to fiction books and am often bored to death by them, so I mostly focus on non fiction. Not the case with Partials. I loved the John Cleaver series and thought I’d finally give this a try. So we’ll worth it! Engaging. Brilliantly written. Fast paced after the initial slow start. A little too long but ultimately great.
