Publisher's summary

What will you do when the sickness comes knocking?

Kit Easton had struggled her entire life. Things couldn't possibly have gotten any worse for her...until the day they did. Her mother was dying, her husband had long ago become the enemy, they were down to their last dime, and her daughter had distanced herself to avoid everyone and everything.

When Kit's sister takes their mother to New York for what is supposed to be a revolutionary, life-saving cure, a disaster no one could have predicted strikes. But it isn't just Kit's family that is affected, it rocks the entire world.

Now, with nothing but the help of a neighbor she barely knows, Kit must venture out into the dangerous new world in search of her family. Will she be able to find them before it's too late?

Kinda zombie story

Moved at a fast pace. Unrealistic luck and super fast character development of female lead. I never really liked romance stories but this is okay.

Original Premise. Under cooked in some places.

The story was cool, but the characters seemed in many places completely devoid of emotion. People are shot and killed and their emotions are completely brushed over. It seemed like it was going in the right direction, but too many details were omitted for me to be able to recommend it.

Short but totally worth it

I loved this book a lot. kit, the main character is just a regular mom and then gets thrust into all this chaos. it's amazing to see her perseverance. I'm definitely going to number two.

great storyline and narration

I liked the storyline and it's something different from usual zombie apocalypse books. I just wish the book was longer so I could enjoy it longer. excited to start the next book in the series.

A mess!

Not even sure where to start.
The narration is solid.
The entire "story" falls apart rather quickly. What starts as a mutated virus story devolves into a quasi zombie story. The book is light on any facts, and is more of a glimpse into a pseudo diary and endless internal monolog.
The power grid collapses overnight but cell service still works. Roving bands of scavengers are turned away with polite conversation. Quasi militia check points are passed without a shakedown. Teen daughter has been captured by slavers who only bind her and use harsh language in her general vicinity. And all of this happens in a 48? 72 hour time frame.

Meh

Just skip it. The characters are poorly developed and annoying. The narration is overly breathy. The plot is boring.

Stupid Characters

I got to Chapter 10 before I finally gave up. I cannot abide stupidity and this book is full of it.

Reads like a YA novel

Even though Kit is a Grown woman with a teenage daughter, her behavior is that of a teenager with no coping skills! True some of that stems from the verbal abusive relationship with her husband, but still! And the way she secretly pines over her neighbor Blake less than 24 hours after what happens to her husband was ridiculous. Once she started lamenting on how good his body looked (again just a day or 2 after her husbands demise), I knew it was time to let this on go. Very little on the virus, and more on Kit's coping ( or lack there of) in a world gone crazy
