A Reese's Book Club Winter YA Pick

A new love, a secret sister, and a summer she'll never forget.

From the beloved author of Tweet Cute comes Emma Lord's You Have a Match, a hilarious and heartfelt novel of romance, sisterhood, and friendship....

When Abby signs up for a DNA service, it’s mainly to give her friend and secret love interest, Leo, a nudge. After all, she knows who she is already: Avid photographer. Injury-prone tree climber. Best friend to Leo and Connie...although ever since the B.E.I. (Big Embarrassing Incident) with Leo, things have been awkward on that front.

But she didn’t know she’s a younger sister.

When the DNA service reveals Abby has a secret sister, shimmery-haired Instagram star Savannah Tully, it’s hard to believe they’re from the same planet, never mind the same parents - especially considering Savannah, queen of green smoothies, is only a year and a half older than Abby herself.

The logical course of action? Meet up at summer camp (obviously) and figure out why Abby’s parents gave Savvy up for adoption. But there are complications: Savvy is a rigid rule-follower and total narc. Leo is the camp’s co-chef, putting Abby's growing feelings for him on blast. And her parents have a secret that threatens to unravel everything.

But part of life is showing up, leaning in, and learning to fit all your awkward pieces together. Because sometimes, the hardest things can also be the best ones.

the story is not what you think from the title

cute book about a match to DNA testing. even though it is about high school kids in camp it was a joy to listen to as an adult

More romance than sister drama

Abby never expects to find a full biological older sister when she takes a DNA test. Savannah, controlled, rule-following and darn near perfect is Abby’s opposite and the sisters don’t bond. Abby follows her older sister to camp to try to figure out how Savannah ended up adopted and how their parents’ lives are entwined. The answer is so complicated neither could have guessed.

YOU HAVE A MATCH is a slow burn, starting at a snail’s pace and building to a crescendo of emotion. Emma Lord’s clever word-building had me laughing out loud one minute, crying the next. Abby could be immature and infuriating, she seemed younger than sixteen, definitely a challenge to the well-put-together Savannah. I identified more with Savvy, but liked both young women.

I didn’t enjoy the romance drama between Abby and her friend and wished less of the story focused on that aspect. I wanted more sister-reunion. I also wondered how YOU HAVE A MATCH would have read from both sisters’ points of view.

YOU HAVE A MATCH is great addition to bookshelves and libraries.

Mostly great

I liked the characters, especially the sister relationship. The resolution at the end was very satisfying. I’m not giving it all the stars because there was too much swearing in it, and I felt like the lesbian relationship felt less believable, and like it was added to make the book more diverse

Daughter Loved It

My 13 yo daughter finished this in a day. She didn't leave her room because she didn't want to stop listening. She loved it. (She did say there is a bit of swearing in the book.)

Nice easy no stress

Predictable story that was easy to listen to for a light breezy listen. I would recommend it for young adults-

didn't realize it was a YA book

I was going to give it 1 star but then saw it was a young adult book which makes sense. maybe I would have enjoyed it if I was 13...

Fun

I was really not expecting to love this book as much as I did! I was told it was about a girl who gets a DNA test and uses a dating site to let her DNA pick her date. They meet at a camp. Ummm... no. Lol. This is a: got a DNA test and found out I have a sister, parent trap, also I find love at camp... story. Yes! So. Much. Fun! Every time I had to set this down I growled.

Endearing

2 for 2 for Emily Lord for me. Thoroughly unexpected story line one would expect from the title. Loved the side story and all scenarios happening at once.

Warning, Young Adult book. Didn’t get that from title details.

The book if I was 13, was a good story. Not great. Very very very wordy. Very very very predictable. As an adult, not really at all interesting. I finished because I was on a long car trip and needed something I didn’t need to pay such close attention.

Such a fun escape!

I loved the summer camp setting, the slight mystery, and the spot-on narration. Whole-heartedly recommend!
