Geschichte
From the depths of sleep, Seattle TV reporter Anna Malone awakens to her phone ringing. She rarely drinks, and this hangover is brutal. Why can't she shake the feeling that something terrible happened last night? And why can't she recall any of it? What Anna does remember: an awkward restaurant meal with her married lover, Russ Knoll, and his unsuspecting wife, Courtney. Russ' phone call reveals that Courtney is missing, and as days go by with no trace, he comes under police scrutiny.

Lame and convoluted
Rezensiert am: 20.05.2024
The story is unconvincing, far fetched and relies on the cheap solution of a crazy girl to explain the unlikely events. I only finished listening to find out how far the author would go asking the reader to suspend disbelief. Definitely a book NOT worth reading.

Is this really Grisham???
Rezensiert am: 23.10.2023
I love Grisham´s books but if this is really written by Grisham, then he lost his voice and his craft. The story was boring, without too much action, no trial scenes, a totally unconnected intro (the story with the suicide), - in short, a waste of time and not a good sample of Grisham´s writing. A shame! Read something else by Grisham!

Unconvincing
Rezensiert am: 23.10.2023
At the start the story was quite good and kept me guessing (which was fun), but then the solution to the puzzle was quite obvious and there were so many holes in the story (characters not acting according to role, improbable or rather inexplicable facts and events) I lost interest. How can the author just ignore all these improbable things and the way the characters act unconvincingly, just to get to the final twist that is also unconvincing???

Slow story & terrible speaker
Rezensiert am: 11.01.2022
The story is too slow. Actually I was not sure if this is the story about social work in London, the British class differences, animosity in an office, or a crime. (I will never find out as I´m going to give back this title, it is too boring).
The way the story is read is even worse. in a fairy tale intonation, with an overdone British accent, the tone totally inappropriate for the subject. The worst part was when the thoughts of the killer are read as if this was some rosy love story.
For all these reasons I will never know who the killer really was (I stopped after 3 h of listening), but I suspect the end will be unsurprising.

Geschichte
In 1941: Fighting the Shadow War: A Divided America in a World at War, historian Marc Wortman thrillingly explores the little-known history of America's clandestine involvement in World War II before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Prior to that infamous day, America had long been involved in a shadow war. Winston Churchill, England's beleaguered new prime minister, pleaded with Franklin D. Roosevelt for help. FDR concocted ingenious ways to come to his aid without breaking the Neutrality Acts.

Filling in the blanks
Rezensiert am: 10.01.2022
I´d recommend this perfectly read documentary about the US´s war before the war to anyone who is already familiar with the history of the 30ies and 40ies. This book fills in the blanks, makes history more vivid, unfolding important details before our eyes that other history books do not give.
The book manages to keep the balance between a general overview and a more detailed description, never boring, never too concerned with detail, keeping in mind the big picture at all times.
Perfectly read by Richard Poe, who is my favorite voice.
Listen and enjoy!

A promising beginning and a disappointing ending
Rezensiert am: 07.08.2021
The beginning of the story makes you want to go on listening, but then the whole plot turns into a totally unbelievable fairy tale, and I started wondering how the hero (even if he badly wants to make it to the top) can NOT be suspicious of his sudden career. At the end of the story the reader might ask himself why the FBI was not able to bring the guilty down sooner. On the whole I would not recommend this book. Mitzner has written better books.

Is there a word stronger than far-fetched?
Rezensiert am: 20.04.2021
For this book, far-fetched is not even bad enough, it needs to be totally improbable, unreal, almost ridiculously unbelievable. Anyway, after having listened to this audiobook (especially the last hour was a real ordeal, when it became so unreal and melodramatic that I wanted to shout), I am absolutely sure that I will never ever buy a book by this author again.

is what this thriller succeeds in doing perfectly. I actually enjoyed suspecting everybody in turn, without ever being completely sure. Everything is open until the very last chapter.

Plot overload
Rezensiert am: 07.04.2021
This story consists of several strands of plot that do not make sense together or are even necessary for the main story. The author also tries to mislead the reader (something a lot of thrillers do, of course), but does not really succeed in doing so. I smelled a/the rat right away.
I also found the rosy ending of some of the plots pretty unsatisfying. It was like a happy ending for everybody but the criminal. These happy endings stand in stark contrast to some of the violent scenes described. Is this violence really necessary?
On the whole I would not recommend this audiobook.

Well developed story
Rezensiert am: 03.04.2021
The plot is quite good, the characters are rounded, the back and forth between present and past fits perfectly to weave the story together slowly. The twist at the end is also very clever. You might ask why I did not give the story 5 stars. It´s because I felt disgusted at having to listen to the story from the point of view of the perpetrator. I almost gave the book back after the first hour of listening. But then I have to say that the narrator of the story is a perfect mix of a normal, rather insecure, materialistic everyday person that you would not look at twice and a criminal who is totally unscrupulous and stops at (almost) nothing. The author managed that character depiction perfectly, but it still makes me feel nauseous.
