On August 13, 1991, the Department of Defense stated that of the 148 U.S. servicemen killed in action, 35 were killed by U.S. servicemen firing on or at them. Stewart Powell, National Security Correspondent for Hearst Newspapers, explained this problem, known as “friendly fire.” He also addressed viewers during the live call-in program. close
