Note
The first commentary at the bottom of the column translates: The events of the two Germanic and Marcomannic Wars, which ended successfully under Emperor M. Aurelius, are depicted similarly to the Column of Trajan. Therefore, the sculptor has given the same beginning of a bridge of boats over the Danube, built for the convenience of the army's passage. M. Aurelius, dismounted from his horse, is surrounded on the bridge by the principal captains of the army. It is noteworthy the diversity of the officers of the soldiers, some of whom, called lictors, carry the lituus in the manner of a curved trumpet, as was practiced in the military customs of the ancients. There are also the aquilifers and standard-bearers with images of the gods, and finally those with the labara and other military standards. M. Aurelius, among his captains, delivers the first address to his army, encouraging them to battle and hoping for victory.

We provided the industry with electricity, cities with light, even in villages, electric lamps lit up. In a year, the USSR received 5 billion kilowatt-hours. Right Side (Construction of Factories and Plants) Title: Строительство фабрик и заводов (Construction of Factories and Plants) Text: In October, the revolution triumphed. But the capitalists and landlords did not want to surrender immediately. War! — said the white generals and officers. War! — replied the workers and peasants. Many factories and plants were destroyed by the civil war. And when it was over, it was necessary to rebuild the industry again. By the five-year plan, we spent 5 billion rubles on this.

If the entire population of France were to pull a rope, the Dneprostroi power plant would pull France! Right Side (1932-33 Construction of Factories and Plants) Title: [No specific title provided] Text: According to the five-year plan, our industry will increase fivefold. "We will become a steel country," said Stalin. New plants will give the country cast iron. New factories will give the country textiles. New plants will give the country chemical fertilizers. New machines. And tractors. And locomotives. In the five years, we will spend 16 billion rubles on industry.

When the furnace is opened, a signal is given: Pig iron is coming! A river of fire pours out the metal. This is the future machinery, tractors, locomotives. Before the five-year plan, 3 million tons of pig iron were produced per year. Right Side (Coal) Title: Уголь 1927-28 г. (Coal 1927-28) Text: Coal is needed for power plants; not all of them run on water and peat. Coal is needed for blast furnaces, transportation, and steam engines. Coal is the main fuel of industry. Thousands of miners descend underground for coal. It is raised to the surface and loaded into wagons. In a year, 35 million tons of coal were produced.

We need to give the country pig iron! 20 large blast furnaces and steel plants will be built in the five-year plan. The production of pig iron will increase sixfold. At the end of the five-year plan, 17 million tons of pig iron will be produced per year. The five-year plan will eliminate the hunger for pig iron! Right Side (1932-33 Coal) Title: [No specific title provided] Text: At the end of the five-year plan, the mines will produce 120 million tons of coal per year — more than three times the previous amount. Industry will be provided with fuel. Most of the coal is mined in the Donbas. There, in the deserts and steppes, 60 new mines will be built. During the civil war, the miners left the Donbas. Many workers died on the front. The country will not forget the fallen miners. They conquered the five-year plan!

The country needs oil as much as coal. Steam engines are fueled with oil, and gasoline for cars and tractors is obtained from oil. Before the five-year plan, 12 million tons of oil were produced per year. Right Side (Chemistry) Title: Химия 1927-28 г. (Chemistry 1927-28) Text: Little bread is grown if the land is poorly fertilized. And pests—gophers, ground squirrels, mice—can destroy crops. Chemistry is for the harvest! Chemistry is against pests! Before the five-year plan, the chemical industry poorly supported agriculture. Only 175 thousand tons of chemical fertilizers were produced per year.

Right Side (1932-33 Chemistry) Title: [No specific title provided] Text: At the end of the five-year plan, chemical plants will provide much more fertilizers. Not twice, not five, not ten times, but twenty-five times more fertilizers than before. 15 million tons of fertilizers will be produced annually by chemical plants. Fertilizers are needed for the fields of collective farms. Chemical defense is the protection against pests. The Red Army, armed with chemicals, will protect the USSR!

But a lot of land lies fallow, growing only weeds. Before the five-year plan, we had only 30 thousand tractors, and there were still few collective farms in the villages. We harvested 75 million tons of bread per year. Right Side (Forests) Title: Лес 1927-28 г. (Forests 1927-28) Text: Thousands of kilometers of forests stretch across the USSR. A quarter of all the forests in the world grow in our country. Forestry helps our construction industry. Wood is needed for building and for firewood. Paper is made from wood. Before the five-year plan, all railways in our country were 80 thousand kilometers long. Right Side (Culture) Title: Культура 1927-28 г.
