Excellent is not a good enough word for a masterpiece.

I picked up a new, unused version of the re-release of the Traveling Wilburys with the two CDs and the DVD for $27 or $28 bucks on eBay, and I so happy that I did. Here are five of the all time greatest artists and performers that there ever were and what a sound they made together. No one will ever duplicate the wonderful voice of Roy Orbison and George will always be remembered as a Beatle, though many of his best works were for charities and solo accomplishments. Its a crying shame that they are gone now, but their musical abilities combined with Bob, Tom and Jeff as well as the other artists involved will live on forever.

The Traveling Wilburys reminds me of the days of the great Beatle hit albums and how they competed with the Rolling Stones for the best album on the charts for a period of several years. That was a breathtaking time it was as we all anxiously awaited the release of the next masterpiece of a day long gone now. But we have the Wilburys to take us back!

A couple of years ago I won tickets, airfare and hotel accommodations for my wife and I to fly to Dallas to attend Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Concert held in the Cotton Bowl. There were over thirty acts performing there including Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Santana, ZZ Top, John Mayer, Jonny Lang and so many more that it made my head spin. Wow, what a concert! Three days of some of the best Blues musicians around today. The days were warm and the Blues were wonderful.

Just as the Wilburys are today with their immense variety of talent and the various backgrounds they all came from, they came together and amazed us all with new music that only the five of them together could ever create. This dual CD set and the DVD will be the highlight of my musical collection for years to come. I can't praise the five Wilburys enough. I highly recommend that anyone who ever loved the music of the Beatles, the wonderful lyrics of Bob Dylan, the one of a kind voice of Roy Orbison, the versatility of Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn had better get their hands on a copy of this dual CD set with the DVD while they still can. eBay is probably your best bet as the seller I won my brand new set from was auctioning several new copies.

One more pitch for Tom Petty. I attended one of his concerts a couple of years ago and I was on my feet through the entire concert! What a versatile performer he is, and so entertaining. His live performance sounded just like his songs do on the radio or on my stereo. Its easy to see how he would fit in with the Wilburys and be a positive influence on the group as well.

I saw the Stones back in 1967 when they were on their way to the top and the Doors when Jim Morrison could still standup on stage. And Clapton was superb in Dallas, but the Wilburys are pieces of many top groups and soloists over the years and I don't think that they will ever be forgotten as long as there are still a few of us around that love good music.

A Classic Supergroup Re-Releases a Stunning Boxset

For the Fabric 1st Release

In 1988, five titans of rock, whom had always wanted to play together informally, assembled for two studio records. The five: Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty. Many of them had worked in tandems before, but never all five together in some blender version of genius stew. The result was a finely toned mixture of folk and rock Americana even though Harrison and Lynne are Brits. Sadly, Orbison died a couple of weeks after the release of the first album. He didn’t get to contribute to the second album, “Volume 3” (don’t ask me why they named their 2nd album: Vol. 3. Makes no sense to me! )

Tom Petty performed ‘Handle With Care, one of two highly charted singles from the first album, live in concert for years. The first release is generally acknowledged as the most memorable of the two. “Tweeter and the Monkey Man” also got airplay as an FM favorite of alternative radio.

In June of 2007, both hard to find and out of print cds/albums were repackaged and put out as 2-cd and 1 DVD boxset. There are four total bonus cuts of previously unreleased Traveling Wilburys tracks. There are two versions of the boxset: The basic version (Suggested Retail $39.99- sells actually for $29 and up new) and the second ‘Deluxe/Limited Numbered Version (Suggested Retail $69.99 – a good price would be $50-60.)

Usually numbered versions of boxsets appreciate in value, especially if they are indeed limited. Both boxset versions have 2 CD’s and 1 DVD. The Limited boxset also includes a larger thicker box, bigger insert booklet with many more photos of the rockers, postcards and a fabric covered box.

The DVD contains two main elements: a 28 minute rockumentary of the band formation; and five different Wilburys videos. Just like the audio performances, there is a reality-check starkness to the video and audio quality of the DVD. I found it enthralling. Where else can you see five superstars of this magnitude, being humble, natural and just enjoying the moment?

Fans have long awaited a remastering of these long out of print (OOP) cds, and they were treated with a double choice of prime beef rock and roll. Highly recommended and an outstanding gift to the rock collector who already has every known album or cd known to man!

update: in late 2007, due to demand, the label DID re-release both versions of the expensive and inexpensive packaging, but differentiated them from the originals. The fabric box will only be in the first release. The only different between the new and old versions were the fabric box, and the specific numbering of the original releases with serial numbers.

True to form the Traveling Wilburys Collection is a Gem

I was doing a search for music DVD's when this gem came up in the search. I have original CD's of the group and thought I would like to see them in a concert setting. The DVD was my goal, the cds are simply a great bonus that allows me to share my original music media with our 23 year old son and his friends. My wife and I sat down to watch the show on the HTPC and enjoyed it throughly.Anyone who watched MTV during it's hey day had seen the music videos before as we had, we generally knew the group story, but we did not know some of the more interesting details that we learned by watching the DVD.for example the story about the empty rocking chair in one of the videos. It is not very long DVD, we have played it as a warm up piece for folks over to watch a full concert with us.(Tom Petty) We are very pleased to have it in our music DVD collection, it is entertaining, collectable and was a great deal on E Bay.Read full review...

I have always enjoyed the music of the five artist.

I love that this product offered me a DVD with the CD as well. I always listen from time to time the older music of Bob Dylan,Roy Orbison,George Harrison,Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. I still have albums with alot of these mens music going as far back as the Beatles. My reason for the purchase is simple I love hearing these five artist playing music together. All the music they have recorded and made together is Excelent Music. They are Five great Music Hall of Famers in their own right. ThanksRead full review...

The Traveling Wilburys Collection - Traveling Wilburys

This is the album of a Secret Society of Rock Super Stars who decided to get together when possible to record music under this ridiculous name. I swear, it's true! You've got Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, all together having fun and recording music.

The untimely death of Roy Orbison prevented this group from creating more music together. I have no idea why The Traveling Wilbury's never caught on like they should have, given that the music is fantastic, and the fans of all these great musicians will love it! Perhaps it's because of the secrecy surrounding the CDs and the scarcity of the Wilbury's work. But don't take that as a poor reflection of the quality of the music! The music stands alone and is great music, but it is even more fun as you listen and try to figure out who is who.

Believe me, this is terrific music from Dylan, Harrison, Orbison, Petty and Lynn, and you will not regret for a second your purchase of this CD.

Bob, Tom, George, Jeff and Roy!

George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison! The only "super group" I've ever heard where they actually sound like they are having a great time together, but is isnt just great fun, its great music as well. This collection makes the experience even better. If your a fan of any one of these guys, you are in for a treat! And if the music wasnt enough, they have a great DVD in this collection as well with lots of content.Read full review...

Best CD collection ever

We were told that the Traveling Wilburys Collection was really good, but wasn't in stores anymore. My first thought was: I can find it on eBay. And I did. It seemed a little pricy, but WOW is it ever worth it. The music is great, because it's made by the best of the best. The best rock and roll singer, Roy Orbison, the best lyricist, Bob Dylan, and your average guitar players and singers, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Jeff something from ELO. So the music blows you away. Then there's the videos that go along. Great stuff. They even work Orbison's death into "At the End of the Line" by putting his guitar on a rocking chair and his picture on a stand nearby. Gulp! And the setting is on a train--get it, the end of the line?
Then you get to the video that was shot when they were MAKING up the songs. They had 10 days to write enough songs to make an album. Literally a song a day. It is so awesome to watch a song come together so quickly. Plus you get to see how they interact and how each person had so much respect for all the others. This collection is worth getting at ANY price. So glad we got it.

Traveling Wilburys - A Legend in Music

I've done a little research on trying to find out something about The Traveling Wilburys and it is hard to find. I did find that this was a ONCE IN A LIFETIME kind of group effort by some of the best legends in music - Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne. I adore The Beatles, there will never be another voice like Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan is one of a kind, Tom Petty is amazing, and the music that Jeff Lynne wrote for ELO was fantastic.

Something like this may never happen again. Sadly, Roy and George have both passed away.

After receiving this, I read all the historical things that came with it. And it truly, truly made me so glad that I was able to find this and purchased it.

The Traveling Wilburys

When I heard Tom Petty had passed. I wanted a way to remember him and his music. A good way would be to have one of his CDs so I thought the Wilburys would be good because along with Tom Petty George Harrison and Roy Orbison have all gone on to God's great venue in the sky. This band was truly Heaven bound.Read full review...
