Synopsis
Monette Morgan Young wrote about the area she knew best, the northeast corner of Calhoun County, Mississippi, where she was born and reared. This area included the old communities of Cherry Hill and Reid with their focal point at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church. She blends her library and census data research with information from family Bibles and hours of discussions with older family members and the hundreds of letters she exchanged with far-flung distant cousins. To this she adds her own personal memories of growing up as a single child on a small isolated farm and the daily life there. Binding all this together is her narrative similar to sitting on her front porch with a glass of iced tea and listening to her tell about the times gone by and the people and how they lived. The book includes a census of the Poplar Springs cemetery conducted in 1985 by her cousin Clarence Morgan and his family and which has been annotated with genealogical information for many of the listings by Monette Young.
