Raising productivity in robot welding

A monitoring system for robotic welding that reportedly improves productivity, quality, and weld integrity has been developed by MachineView, a division of Computational Systems Inc., Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Weld View system monitors critical variables of robotic welding tips, including dressing, temperature, pressure, and alignment. The system automatically collects and analyses data to verify weld integrity, and alerts plant personnel if impending quality problems exist. It can also monitor shunt cable resistance, secondary circuit electrical parameters, transformer temperature, and cooling water blockage.

Applications are in plants and facilities that have automated welding systems, especially in the car industry where spot welding is the primary method for joining two pieces of sheet metal.
