Q/A PERRY FARRELL
AS PERRY FARRELL PREPARES TO TOUR IN SUPPORT OF KIND HEAVEN, HIS FIRST SOLO ALBUM IN 18 YEARS, IT’S APPARENT THAT THE MAN BEHIND JANE’S ADDICTION, PORNO FOR PYROS AND THE LOLLAPALOOZA MUSIC FESTIVAL HASN’T SLOWED DOWN MUCH. DESPITE TURNING 60 THIS YEAR, FARRELL IS WORKING TIRELESSLY ON REHEARSING FOR AND PROMOTING HIS UPCOMING TOUR—ALL WHILE MANAGING TO SET ASIDE PLENTY OF TIME TO PLAY. DURING A BREAK FROM ONE OF HIS REHEARSALS, FARRELL SPOKE TO HIGH TIMES ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM, HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH CANNABIS AND, OF COURSE, THE AFTERLIFE.
How are things in your world?
I feel a little stressed because we’re putting the shows together for the tour, and we’re in rehearsal. You want to be great, and you’re breaking in a new band on a new project. It is physically taxing on a performer, you know? We’re performing for probably four hours in rehearsals. You don’t really get any downtime, and it becomes kind of precious. These days, being a celebrated entertainer, the monster that is the media today, marketing yourself online with Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and everything else, it can wear a guy out. Especially a guy that likes to party.
On the new, you say humanity is at its greatest when we embrace what we have in common and celebrate our differences. There’s also this idea of a new era where we can live in peace and God will live among us. The comfort this record is bringing me right now is remarkable.
