Teas and tisanes have been drunk for centuries – but did you know they’re not actually the same thing? True teas (green tea, black tea, Oolong etc) are made from the leaves of the plant camellia sinensi, and tisanes are brewed from the leaves of, well, any other plant but that one! Some say the name ‘tisane’ comes from the French the (tea) and sans (without), literally meaning ‘without tea’!
You can make tisanes out of virtually any plant simply by steeping it in boiling water – and tisanes or herbal teas made from fruits, flowers and spices are very popular. They’re often drunk
