Big cat battle

We visited the Kruger Park for the day, hoping to see lions. Late in the afternoon, we found these two males on the bank of a dry riverbed near the Orpen gate. They were lying in the shade and we watched them for about 10 minutes.

There were buffalo and impala in the area, but the lions were lazy and hardly even lifted their heads. When an impala ewe ventured too close, one of the lions jumped up and gave chase, but his heart wasn’t in it.

Suddenly, however, both lions looked in our direction and crossed the riverbed. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something in the grass in front of us – it dashed at the two lions at great speed.
