THAT SINKING FEELING

Well, I think that is lambing over, but I am not sure. However, I can safely say it’s been the most unsatisfactory lambing we have ever had.

Firing blanks

We knew it would be a long and drawn-out affair because of the blank firing older tup. We started off not too bad, the first lot lambed on the right dates, but strangely we were only getting single tup lambs. Then one gave us twins, then the trouble started. Around about the time a shearling was due to lamb she started mooching about in the corners of the barn, then she got a swelling at the back end and one morning a reddish, greyish lump was hanging out.

We have seen this before, it’s a prolapse. We called the vet, and he came out. After a bit of pushing and twisting, he pulled out an aborted lamb. He reckoned it was about three months formed and it was pure coincidence that it happened around the time she should have lambed.

We continued with tup lambs, then another ewe was looking uncomfortable, we kept an eye on her. She started pushing around tea time and out came the head but only one
