Tales from MY TREE

My mum’s mother was Muriel Annie Phillips. Born in 1902 in Erith, Kent, she grew up to be an attractive and talented lady. Her piano playing was excellent and she planned to teach piano. She also worked in the florist’s shop in Pier Road.

During World War I, her brother worked for Vickers and consequently she met Frederick Cameron Dorrell, my grandfather.

Unfortunately, Muriel’s mother, Annie, was less keen on him as Frederick’s family came from Wheatley Terrace, which Annie considered a less pleasant part of Erith. Annie was upwardly mobile and was occupying at least the third house of her married life, a newly built home
