Even when I’m not supposed to be working, I never really switch off from the donkeys. Last year, on New Year's Eve, an email came in from our head of welfare, explaining that the RSPCA had been to evaluate three donkeys found in a muddy Lancashire field. They needed rescuing
– and I volunteered.
It doesn't get any easier to see donkeys in distress, and when I arrived it was heart-wrenching to witness what a sorry state David, Connie and Theo were in. They were shivering in the cold, and so malnourished and skinny, their bones were showing through their winter coats. All were infested with lice, and one of the foals had hair loss on
