When he took up the job, the old King was still on the throne. He had been made the junior of 11 full-time keepers and paid what had at the time seemed the princely sum of four shillings a week. He lined up with the others, hat in hand, and pulled his forelock respectfully when the two florins were pressed into his palm. All of it bar sixpence he gave to his mother, but during the quarter of an hour it took him to walk down the lane to the cottage, he felt a rich man.
