Desert Patrol

Some of us are naturally adventurous, but for others it takes a dramatic turn of events. My life went upside down when I suddenly lost my job with the police. Shortly after that, my wife decided that marriage wasn’t for her and walked out. By the time my father died later that year, I was feeling pretty reckless.

I decided to build a campervan and head off across the country. As an afterthought, I bought a Yamaha WR250R to take along. It was the only bike I looked at. I didn’t know how to ride and had been under the impression that Yamaha just made musical instruments.

Over the following year, I picked up a thing or two about riding as I ventured into some of the wildest places in this country – Cape York, Kakadu and Fraser Island, to name a few. I found myself back in Melbourne around Christmas of 2018 but, after about five
