The flash fiction genre, of which this collection is an example, will be new to many readers, who may be diverted by the multiple meanings of the adjective. “Shining brightly”, “moving quickly”, “conspicuously impressive” — all these are relevant here, although, strictly speaking, when it comes to fiction, the label refers to work of extreme brevity.

There is nothing hasty about Cottrell’s debut. There is evidence of much hard grind here, as anyone who has ever tried to wrestle a lot of information into a short space will realise.
