Further to Dr Wragg Sykes’s fascinating feature on early female archaeologists (Spades, Soil and Sisterhood, December), it’s worth stating that recent research suggests that Christian MacLagan may not have been the earliest female archaeologist in Britain. The discoveries of Alicia Spottiswoode, formally known as “Lady John Scott”, were published earlier than MacLagan’s. Both women featured in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, but Lady John appeared in 1865 and MacLagan in the early 1870s.
