A chance to reflect on modern values

The question of how a Pacific nation grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi engages with and relates to a hereditary monarch on the other side of the world isn’t new. But for the first time in 70 years we have the opportunity to ask this question unencumbered by our feelings about a particular person.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II is a chance for us to reflect on who we are as a nation and the type of Aotearoa we want to pass on to our kids. It is fascinating to see how this debate is shaping up.

There is no doubt that the Queen served her country and its former colonies. She was also a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be missed by those who loved her. But there is a disconnect here. The language
