Into the mind of Magnum

Having been co-founded by Henri-Cartier Bresson, the Magnum Photos agency has had street photography running through its veins since its inception in 1947. Through its journalistic documentary bias, it continues to this day to work on the principles of telling stories about people and places all over the world. The agency has well over 100 members and could have asked any number of them to put together a street photography course, but it’s brought together some of its biggest guns for this online, on-demand offering.

Across two and a half hours of video we get to hear from Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden, Peter Van Agtmael, Susan Meiselas, Ian Berry, Richard Kalvar, Carolyn Drake and Mark Power, as well as non-photographic advisors from inside and outside the agency. I took the course to see what it has to offer the enthusiast photographer.

Structure

The Magnum Art of Street Photography course is part of the agency’s offering of learning resources that comprises in-person workshops as well as these online courses. Online courses are on-demand, so you can stop and start them as you like and come back and watch again if you want to – which you probably will. This course comprises ten modules, each consisting of a video segment and a downloadable workbook that summarises what was covered in the video.
