My first home, and the home of my family’s roots, was in the town of Pompton Falls, N.J. My grandmother’s family, the Cards, had lived there for generations, dating back to a Peter Card in 1776. In the early 1930s, my parents and I were living in an upstairs apartment in a house owned by my grandmother, known to her grandchildren as “Gram.”
Our apartment had four small rooms, but those four rooms were filled with love, and that’s what makes a house a home.
