This bloody ninja greydwarf!” isn’t something I expected to hear from Valheim’s lead artist Robin Eyre as we fled Valheim’s new biome, the Mistlands. But as we reached the Black Forest, a greydwarf suddenly attacked. Turns out, being a Valheim developer doesn’t make you immune to some of the game’s numerous quirks.
“One of the nice things about working on is, because of the chaotic-ness of it, we can still play our game and enjoy it and be surprised by things that happen,” said Jonathan Smårs, Iron Gate Studios’ senior developer for the Viking survival game, as he and Robin showed me some of the sights arriving in the long-awaited Mistlands update. The update adds a mysterious new biome to the sprawling world of the Viking afterlife, new enemies to battle, a new boss monster, and an entirely new system for players: magic.
