1921 CENSUS REVELATIONS

I wonder if the experience of other reader; trying to find relatives in the 1921 census echoes mine. I upgraded my subscription to Findmypast (findmypast.co.uk) to include free access to this census, but was disappointed not to find my fondly remembered spinster great aunt Muriel Mary Tattersall (1879-1974). Not only was she not in Ripon with her parents, but no Muriel Tattersall of her vintage was to be found anywhere in England and Wales. Wildcards didn't seem to help either.

Unwilling to give up, I decided to check some electoral rolls on Ancestry (ancestry.co.uk) for the Ripon area. Bingo. I found her living in Cold Bath Road, Harrogate. Returning to the census, I was able to use the 1921 ‘Addresses' button to find her living with several nurses and running a nursing home called the Misses Lacy and Tattersall Sydenham Nursing Home, Harrogate. Findmypast had transcribed her surname as '‘Tathall”!
