Sunflowers in Skagway

ELLA LOVED HER new life in Skagway, Alaska, except for one thing—Grandmother wasn’t happy.

In Kansas, Papa and Ella had lived next door to Grandmother. Ella went to Grandmother’s house every day after school, and they baked or gardened or sewed. Sometimes Grandmother told stories about Ella’s mother, who had died in 1891 when Ella was just a baby.

Then Papa announced he’d gotten a job with the White Pass and Yukon Railroad.

“Alaska!” Grandmother squawked. “Surely you’re not going to drag your daughter all the way to Alaska!”

“Of course I’m taking Ella,” Papa said. “I couldn’t do without her.”
