This week, John Ferneley
IT WAS JOHN MANNERS, THE 5TH
Duke of Rutland, who first spotted John Ferneley’s artistic talent, when he saw his paintings decorating the wagons that Ferneley Snr, a wheelwright, repaired and repainted. Born in the pretty village of Thrussington, Leicestershire, in 1782, John Ferneley was encouraged by the Duke to become a pupil, in 1803, of the noted equestrian artist Benjamin Marshall at
