MATCHING THE HATCH

When fly anglers talk about matching the hatch, they are talking about putting a fly in front of the fish that matches whatever they are feeding upon at the time – whichever insect is hatching and abundant and vulnerable to being predated by the fish. These are the flies the fish are tuned into feeding on at that moment. The same principle applies for sea fish but it is not always so easy to do. There are some wonderful flies, like clouser minnows, which, on their day, are fantastic for catching bass.
