Daisy Johnson was only weeks out of drama school, so you can imagine how thrilled she was to land a part in a big West End theatre production. Not just any part either, but the title role.
It didn’t even matter that the play was The Body in the Drawing Room. That’s right – Daisy was playing ‘the body’.
‘I’m afraid you won’t have anything to say, for obvious reasons,’ said the director, Jimmy Havisham. ‘But you’ll be on stage for the whole of the first act.’
‘What if I sneeze?’
‘One of the other actors will pretend it was them. The thing you have to worry about is cramp, and lack of concentration, and we’ll probably hide your face behind a piece of furniture because of your breathing. You’d be surprised how many people watch an actor playing a dead body just to catch them breathing.’
‘Well, if you’re sure I can do it.’
‘Of course you can do it! You’ll have a great time.’
