‘I was born chubby, and I have always carried extra weight, but when I started studying in 2012 it got worse,’ says 33-year-old nurse Selena Harihar, who lives in Durban. ‘I remember long days of studying… and Shashi would always bring me a litre of Tropika or Coke, and my favourite ice creams and chocolates.
‘I’ve been overweight since my school days,’ says Shashi, who is 39 years old and works as a security officer. ‘I picked up more weight after I moved to be closer to Selena in 2012. From then on, we shared delicious meals together on a daily basis. She would prepare my lunch and include delicious treats to keep me going through my 12-hour shifts.’
Selena works in a busy emergency room where things are always in a state of high stress from the time she starts her shift to when she goes home. So, on her days off, she would treat and sooth herself by relaxing on the couch watching Netflix and scrolling through social media. ‘I’d snack and do as little as possible. And I’d order Mr D or Uber Eats daily.’
