My boyhood traplines were very simple affairs. I trapped the drainage ditches in the flats of what was once the Great Black Swamp on the southwestern shore of Lake Erie. An effective drainage system was made with a checkerboard of roads and ditches constructed at one-mile intervals.
The dredging from the ditch made the bed for the road. Those ditches were the only traplines, and being directly adjacent to the road, there was a terrible propensity for theft. Johnny Sneakum, or Johnny Scumbag as I like
