IF THE human brain is so amazing, why can’t it manage a simple task like making us feel fantastic all the time? And why aren’t we happier when we’re living longer, healthier lives than ever before?
These are the questions Dr Anders Hansen wanted to answer when he started writing his latest book, The Happiness Cure: Why You’re Not Built for Constant Happiness and How to Find a Way Through.
“I believe the answer to why we feel so bad when we have it so good is that we have forgotten we’re biological beings,” says Dr Hansen, a Swedish psychiatrist whose research is focused on understanding why the brain works the way it does.
He believes looking at our emotional life and wellbeing from a neurobiological perspective is vital.
“It gives us a deeper insight into what we need to prioritise to feel as good as we can. It also helps us to understand ourselves better, which in turn makes us kinder to ourselves.”
