On Dec. 28, 1972, a low-flying North Vietnamese MiG-21 turned to intercept an RA-5C Vigilante piloted by Lt. Cdr. Alfred H. Agnew of the U.S. Navy. He was flying a low-level post-strike reconnaissance mission to avoid anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) and surface-to-air missiles
