I WAS sharing a fire with my old friend Royce Buckle, who’d been a professional hunter in East Africa during the ‘golden age’ of safaris. The conversation drifted to hunting literature that had emanated from those times, and I remarked that I had lapped it up as a youth but as I got older and learned more, I sometimes wondered about the veracity of some of the stories I’d read.
