CURVED SQUARE BLOCK

f067-01.jpg

Transformed with curves!

As we work our way through this collection of curvy blocks, the various techniques and strategies become familiar and recognisable as they turn up in the designs, casting their spell to transform regular angular patchwork blocks into softer, more organic versions. The same, only different…

This block uses frames around a centre square on point, usually looking like the drawn version in Fig 1. Layered folded squares that roll back into curves change the effect into the design shown in Fig 2: corners become quarter-circles, diagonal straight lines become wavy curves and a new block is revealed.

Choosing the fabrics

The Cathedral Window-style centre is made using a light fabric with a leafy design from the Parchment range (16953 11) and is surrounded by three (3) full frames before the final background area of the plainer background fabric (16957 11) that completes the block.

The first frame uses a dark fabric from the Ink range (16953 15), while the next frame is made from the patterned background fabric (Parchment range [16954 13]). The third frame is the large curved-corner square frame that dominates the design and is made with a medium fabric from the Sky range (16953 13). The same dark fabric from the Ink range is used beyond this last frame, breaking into the background border to add an unexpected curvy feature beyond the main central design.
