A living son of indentured parents

1930s: GOVINDSAMY (JOHN) PUNGAN

GOVINDSAMY Pungan, well known as John Pungan, the youngest son of Thoyee and Pungan Velan, was born in Tea Estate, Inanda. He completed his matric at the Stanger Indian High School in 1950 and then enrolled at the Springfield College of Education in 1952, where he graduated with a Natal Teachers’ Junior Diploma.

In 1953, he commenced teaching at the Talwantsingh School, Verulam. In 1956, he was transferred to Moonsamy School, Inanda, where he taught until 1958. He was then transferred to Verulam High in January 1959.

He married Doreen Mary, the youngest daughter of James and Alma Samuel.
