1 Set in Rome in 79 AD, the series follows the corrupt nature of the business of entertaining the masses – and keeping them in line – with chariot racing, gladiator fights and free food. The show is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Daniel P Mannix and was written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Robert Rodat who penned Saving Private Ryan.
