My favourites sit on my shelf alongside my own little library of eight – soon to be nine – novels, though I consider myself in a different league as a ‘jobbing writer’. As such, I usually have two books on the go at any one time, sometimes three if you include edits and publicity. I’m very fortunate to be a full-time scribe, though not up with the lark like some authors I know.

After twenty years as a midwife and being called out at all hours, I’m dreadful at getting up! Fortunately, my dog, Basil, is also a late sleeper by canine standards, but we’ll be up in the woods by nine, or walking with friends. Then, it’s onto the coffee shop, with Basil in tow; I’ll often start by looking at my current WIP, edit yesterday’s output and forge on.
