About this audiobook
When she first went to sea in April of 1961, the U.S. nuclear submarine Thresher was the most advanced submarine at sea, built specifically to hunt and kill Soviet submarines. In The Death of the USS Thresher, renowned naval and intelligence consultant Norman Polmar recounts the dramatic circumstances surrounding her implosion, which killed all 129 men on board, in history's first loss of a nuclear submarine. This revised edition of Polmar's 1964 classic is based on interviews with the Thresher's first command officer, other submarine officers, and the designers of the submarine. Polmar provides recently declassified information about the submarine, and relates the loss to subsequent U.S. and Soviet nuclear submarine sinkings, as well as to the escape and rescue systems developed by the Navy in the aftermath of the disaster. The Death of the USS Thresher is a must-listen for the legions of fans who enjoyed the late Peter Maas's New York Times bestseller The Terrible Hours.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book. Lot's of information in it. Even covers other lost subs on both sides.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a fact-filled book telling of the loss of the atomic submArine Thresher on 10 Apr 1963 when it sank about 200 miles east of Boston with the loss of all the 129 persons aboard. It is the world's worst submarine disaster. The book tells of the Thresher's history and all that is known of the loss and the effort to locate and determine the cause, including the Navy's court of inquiry which began immediately after the loss. I found the book of much interest and I have no submarine knowledge . The book has a list of all the people on the sub when it went down. They had a fearful brief time but none could have survived more than a few minutes at most. There is a good site on the Internet which lists all the persons who died and shows a picture of each. I foudn the book well worth reading..
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5April 10, 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the US nuclear submarine USS Thresher. This incident is the worst submarine accident in history with 129 men going down with the ship. My family and I have an undocumented connection with this tragedy and I was very interested in learning more of the story. I found this book to be a great place to start my research. The book gives the background on the ship and its crew. It tells of the nature of submarine testing and the events that lead to the loss of the ship. The book has a nice collection of photos to supplement the book and has historical documents in the appendixes. The book also lists the entire crew and visiting Navy and civilian observers that were on board the ship. Although the book tells a sorrowful story, I found that it was written with great respect for the lives involved and had a positive outlook for the future of all submarines and their crew.
