About this audiobook

A charming tale of friendship, love, and loneliness in contemporary Japan

Sentaro has failed. He has a criminal record, drinks too much, and his dream of becoming a writer is just a distant memory. With only the blossoming of the cherry trees to mark the passing of time, he spends his days in a tiny confectionery shop selling dorayaki, a type of pancake filled with sweet bean paste.

But everything is about to change.

Into his life comes Tokue, an elderly woman with disfigured hands and a troubled past. Tokue makes the best sweet bean paste Sentaro has ever tasted. She begins to teach him her craft, but as their friendship flourishes, social pressures become impossible to escape and Tokue's dark secret is revealed, with devastating consequences.

Sweet Bean Paste is a moving novel about the burden of the past and the redemptive power of friendship. Translated into English for the first time, Durian Sukegawa's beautiful prose is capturing hearts all over the world.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be an interesting and heartfelt story about friendship and finding magic in the little things. It explores the treatment of Hanson disease in Japan and triggers readers to examine their own prejudice. The book also delves into deep topics such as alcoholism, disease, societal expectations, and stigmas. Despite these heavy themes, the story is surprisingly light and the friendship between the main characters is beautiful. The narrator/voice actress is fantastic. Overall, readers highly recommend this book.

A nice chill read. A bit of depression warning. Lovely to learn a bit from other cultures.

It was a nice little story, but expected another ending, it left me with the impression that the book is unfinished. Thought till the end that the owner’s wife would be Tokue’s sister❤️would have loved and end like this.

I have actually watched the film when it was featured on a weekend special on tv many years ago. I lived in a small town far from any major bookstore (and not in Japan) so ididn't know about the book. I have now the pleasure of listening to the audio book and I loved it just the same. This story was probably the reason why I love red bean paste so much.

Heartfelt and triggers you to examine your own prejudice about people considered to be different from the majority.

A sweet and surprisingly light read considering the deep topics discussed: alcoholism, disease, societal expectations and stigmas, debt, etc.

Shuntaro, Wakana and Tekomi form an unlikely friendship and bond in a confectionary shop over sweet bean paste, and the life’s (mis)givings.

The narrator/voice actress is fantastic! 10/10 recommend this book.
