Great writing, as usual for Mark Spragg, although the story is very sad

The plot and spare writing were reminiscent of "So Long See You Tomorrow," by William Maxwell: the protagonist has always been in love with his best friend (and neighbor)'s wife. Good, but less well done than "When Rivers Change Direction."

I couldn't help wanting to follow McEban wherever he went as the details of his life are laid out by Mark Spragg. The quick shifts from the present to his childhood make for a little confusion because the situations often seem to overlap so that you are not sure which time you are in---the past or the present---but it's done so on purpose. The audio version, read by the author, is wonderful.
