About this audiobook
"All three narrators are Puerto Rican–born and deliver the Spanish passages with musical grace, thereby enhancing an already fine novel." —The Washington Post
“The narrators’ accents and code-shifting create a vibrant auditory experience. In particular, Guerra’s luscious voice conveys Olga’s transformation from fighter to a compassionate woman as she overcomes dualities and finds wholeness within herself.” – BookPage
A blazing new talent debuts with the story of a status-driven wedding planner grappling with her absent mother, her glittering career amongst New York’s elite and her Puerto Rican roots in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
It’s 2017, and Olga and her brother, Pedro “Prieto” Acevedo are bold faced names in their hometown of New York. Prieto is a popular Congressman representing their gentrifying, Latinx neighborhood in Brooklyn while Olga is the tony wedding planner for Manhattan’s powerbrokers.
Despite their alluring public lives, behind closed doors things are far less rosy. Sure, Olga can orchestrate the love stories of the 1%, but she can’t seem to find her own...until she meets Matteo, who forces her to confront the effects of long held family secrets…
Twenty-seven years ago, their mother Blanca, a Young Lord-turned-radical, abandoned her children to advance a militant political cause, leaving them to be raised by their grandmother. Now, with the winds of hurricane season, Blanca has come barreling back into their lives.
Set against the backdrop of New York City in the months surrounding the most devastating hurricane in Puerto Rico’s history, Xochitl Gonzalez's Olga Dies Dreaming is a story that examines political corruption, familial strife and the very notion of the American Dream—all while asking what it really means to weather a storm.

Editor's Note
Sharp-eyed…
Gonzalez’s sharp-eyed debut captures the richness of Nuyorican culture, love, and family as well as what it means to be true to yourself. Here, a brother and sister have a lot to lose as they navigate family baggage, personal drama, and a near career-ending political scandal. But don’t worry, there’s a happy ending here.

Readers find this title to be a top read this year. The writing is fantastic, with lots going on but overall so good. The book is heart-wrenching, funny, and has amazing characters. The story is amazing and the narration is great. It is well researched, detailed, and relatable. The book explores important themes of family, love, identity, citizenship, community, pride, culture, and power. While some found the beginning slow, once the pieces started to fit together, it was hard to put down. The ending is a perfect mix of happily ever after and plot twist. Overall, it is a compelling read with important messages and superb narration.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5There’s a huge skip and content missing from chapter 21??? Not the first time this has happened on scribd. Really frustrating

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved this audiobook and the three narrators did a great job reading their parts! I’m so glad I listened to this as I don’t think I would have understood this as well. The narration just added so much to the setting.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Somewhat slow to start…at least the first half is mostly character development (I didn’t figure out the main conflict until the last dozen chapters).
Once all the pieces started to fit together it was hard to put down! The ending was the perfect mix of happily ever after and plot twist
Overall it has made me miss learning Spanish and about the Puerto Rican culture. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I don’t have enough words to express how much I loved this book. Heart wrenching, funny, and amazing characters.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fantastic writing! Lots going on but overall so good and is a top read this year
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great characters. Important messages. It is a compelling read. I
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Loved the story telling mixed with history and current significant details. There were parts that were a bit drawn out towards the middle. I enjoyed witnessing the psychology of how one person’s drive can affect other’s perception of themselves and the world. It was a celebration of culture while acknowledging the sacrifice that comes from it and how covert it can be.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Enjoyed listening to this story. Looking for more books by this author.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5There were times in the reading that my anger was stirred up by the politics and greed that actually existed after hurricane Marie. I did not enjoy being reminded of the lack of empathy the US government exhibited toward the people of Puerto Rico .
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I loved the love for Puerto Rico that you can feel the author put in, however the story itself between the multiple point of views, the unnecessary alluding of things with almost no hints of what exactly happened until it was said out. Over all the story had heart, but the story was all over the place no real sense of completion with the book, no sense of direction— can feel some themes but the book does nothing to reassure their readers they’d come to a conclusion. Wouldn’t read again. Would watch if they made a film?
