About this audiobook
Claribel A. Ortega
New York Times Bestselling and award-winning author Claribel A. Ortega went from journalism student, editing her classmates' often hilarious ads and ramblings on the back page of SUNY Purchase’s Independent Newspaper, to a small-town reporter, where she enjoyed going to board of ed meetings and texting the town mayors about the line at Starbucks. Today when she’s not busy turning her obsession with eighties pop culture, magic, and video games into books, she's co-hosting the hilarious and chaotic Bad Author Book Club podcast or helping authors navigate publishing with her consulting business GifGrrl. She is a Marvel contributor and has been featured on Buzzfeed, Bustle, Good Morning America, and Deadline. Claribel’s debut middle grade novel Ghost Squad is a New York Times Bestseller and is being made into a feature film. Ghost Squad won Best in Middle Grade at the 2021 Ignyte Awards, was a Goodreads Choice Award finalist, and an International Latino book awards honorary mention for 2020. Her other titles include Witchlings (Scholastic) and the graphic novel Frizzy (First Second), winner of the 2023 Pura Belpré Award for Children's Text, with Rose Bousamra.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I like to listen to middle grade books as a pallet cleanser for my more intense reads. I loved this book!! I found myself routing for the characters and was deeply amused by all the toad references lol. I can’t wait to start the next one.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book. The background and world building was on point, the character growth was well written, and it wasn’t cliche and obvious how it was going to go down. I pride myself in guessing endings and this was radiant in denying me the ability to guess it. Highly recommend, especially for kids.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow! I REALLY enjoyed this book!
It was cute, made me want more and has magic! And who doesn't love an underdog story! I think I would have been more of a Seven but I have a soft spot for Valli because I think she's misunderstood. And Thorn gets ALL the cuddles!

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is such a cutie middle grade / YA book
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book helped me see that I will find my place at school I’m a middle schooler and life is hard right now but I just hope that I can find friends like Seven. When Seven got placed into a different coven than Poppy it reminded me of 6th grade when all of my friends were in a different class and I was alone. As for being a Spare I’m currently in a similar situation because I’m in a class that I don’t want to be in but it’s what I call the left overs because everyone there can’t fit into a actual elective. I also am a BI girl at school who is mistaken for a boy, and it’s hard to be me and feel free, all that I want now is to get a letter in the mail saying that I’m special and can do magic or something like that so that I can find my people because I just feel so alone. This book is great for everyone who is needing something to smile about and if you feel alone than you will fit right in because there is always room for you in the Spare Coven.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved this book it was kind of similar to Amari And The Night Brothers
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Perfect for kids to read and feel better about themselves. This story brings forward the cruelty of being isolated because you are different. Supports true friendship and looking at things for what they truly are and not what is perceived.
